In the Alicante region, Torrevieja city has a huge pink lagoon of 1,400 hectares called Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja has a Deca Bacterium that secretes a red pigment in waters with a high salt content: in the case of the pink lagoon, 350 grams per liter of water. Not only is it a beautiful wonder of nature in Spain, it is also the most productive salt lagoon on our continent as it produces 800,000 tonnes of salt each year, which is exported to northern Europe and the US for industrial purposes – salt used for spreading, dishwashing and of course cooking. Good to know that there are minitrain tours to the salt mines. You can take the minitrain to the part of the salt “factory”. The train driver says a lot about the laguna, how it extracts salt and what it does with it. It is possible to take a walk in the salt mountains, a chance for children to play with it. Especially we recommend the last trip in the evening, the photos get fantastic!
